9. MUTTON BIRD ROOKERY – (Ocean Beach). Each year in October the mutton birds (Puffinus tenuirostris) return from their winter migration to breed on Ocean Beach. Daily at dawn, a parent bird leaves the nest (a burrow in the sand) and flies out to sea to feed. At dusk the sky is suddenly clouded as hundreds of birds return to their nests, guided by the calls of their mates and young chicks waiting at the burrow entrance. A sight not to be missed. The birds migrate to Japan and South East Asia in mid April. Care and attention should be taken around the rookeries, so as not to collapse burrows by walking on them. Interpretive information has been established.

10. STRAHAN VISITOR CENTRE– Featuring the internationally acclaimed exhibition “West Coast Reflections” and Tasmania’s Longest running play “The Ship that Never Was”. (Charges apply)
